A user's point of view

The first challenge in any design project is understanding exactly what you are trying to design. In human-centred design this is done by observing and talking to users for empathy and insight on how a solution might fit in their lives.

Here however, the users (the participants) are not directly receiving value from completing the collection. There is a societal benefit resulting from the data and good decision making, but really the only need for the users is for their required participation to be as frictionless as possible.

So, we began with a deep dive into the entire process: how the collection worked and what data was gathered—but we did it from a user's point of view. We talked through week-long spending scenarios for all members of a family, hunting down common and uncommon transactions, until we had a solid picture of the kind of behaviour and decision making we needed to support, and the data we needed to capture.
